Cultivating Social Capital in the Organization in the Light of Self-Sacrifice Leadership

Abstract

Objective: Social capital, like bridges that connect individuals to each other, plays a significant role not only in providing resources and information, but also in strengthening a sense of security and trust in the heart of society. Self-sacrifice leadership, as one of the new topics of leadership discussions, plays a special role in developing social capital. The present study aimed to develop social capital under self-sacrifice leadership support. Method: This study is qualitative regarding the type and nature of the data and is applied in terms of purpose. The research strategy employed was Giorgi and Giorgi descriptive phenomenology. The participants in the study included nurses and head nurses providing services in hospitals and elderly care centers, who were interviewed in depth phenomenologically with 18 people using theoretical saturation logic. To achieve the reliability of the study, two methods were used: resonance and reflectivity. Results: The results of data analysis reveal that the essence of how altruistic leadership plays a role in fostering social capital includes four main themes and thirteen sub-themes. The identified main themes are: developing altruism and social growth, strengthening social connections and building trust by relying on social supports, focusing on moral excellence and developing human values, and creating a culture of sacrifice and self-sacrifice patterns. Conclusion: Understanding the behaviors of altruistic leadership can facilitate the development of social capital in light of this leadership style, even for long periods of organizational life.
